Big Mac Sandwiches: A Weeknight Win the Whole Family Will Love

Updated: Oct 22
All the flavors of your favorite drive-thru burger, made right at home. Easy enough for busy weeknights, delicious enough for game day, and guaranteed to have everyone coming back for seconds.

Some days, being a mom feels like running a marathon before you've even thought about what's for supper. Between school pickups, dance practices, errands, and everything else life throws our way, it's tempting to pull into the nearest drive-thru and call it a day. And believe me, there's no judgment here! But sometimes you just want something homemade, something everyone will actually eat, and something that doesn't leave you standing over the stove all evening.
That's where these Big Mac Sandwiches come in.
They're everything we love about a good, juicy burger, tucked between soft, chewy pretzel buns and topped with melty cheese, crisp lettuce, and the easiest homemade special sauce. And the best part? Instead of flipping individual burgers, you bake the beef all at once in the oven. Less fuss, less mess, and more time for everything else on your plate.
Down South, we know a thing or two about feeding a crowd, and these little sandwiches were practically made for gathering. They're perfect for Saturday tailgates, football watch parties, casual Sunday suppers, or those weeknights when the whole family seems to be going in five different directions.
There's something about a tray of warm sandwiches sitting on the kitchen counter that just brings everybody running. No fancy ingredients, no complicated steps, just good food made to be shared.
And isn't that what gathering around the table is all about?

Big Mac Sandwiches
Prep Time: 10–15 minutes
Cook Time: Approximately 30 minutes
Total Time: 40–45 minutes
Perfect For: Family dinners, tailgates, game days, and feeding a crowd
Ingredients
For the sandwiches:
2 packs of pretzel buns
2 lbs ground beef
½ onion, finely chopped
Salt and pepper, to taste
Lettuce
Sliced cheese of your choice
For the homemade special sauce:
½ cup mayonnaise
½ cup sweet relish
½ cup ketchup
Salt and pepper, to taste
Instructions
Preheat your oven. Set your oven to 350°F and line a baking sheet with aluminum foil for easy cleanup.
Prepare the beef. Finely chop half an onion and combine it with the ground beef in a large mixing bowl. Season with salt and pepper, mixing until everything is evenly incorporated.
Shape and bake. Divide the beef mixture into two equal portions. Flatten each portion into a square or rectangle sized to fit your pretzel buns. Place both on the prepared baking sheet and bake for approximately 30 minutes, or until browned and the center reaches 160°F.
Whip up the special sauce. While the beef is cooking, combine the mayonnaise, sweet relish, and ketchup in a small bowl. Add a pinch of salt and pepper, stir until smooth, and set aside.
Build your sandwiches. Slice the pretzel buns in half and arrange the bottom halves in a 9x13-inch baking dish, working in batches if needed. Carefully transfer the cooked beef onto the buns.
Add the good stuff. Layer with cheese, fresh lettuce, and a generous drizzle of homemade special sauce.
Serve and enjoy! Add the top buns, slice into individual sandwiches, and serve while warm.
A Few Tips From the Kitchen
Make it a tailgate favorite. These are a great option when you're feeding a hungry crowd. Prepare the sauce ahead of time, have your toppings ready, and assemble everything just before serving.
Keep supper simple. Serve alongside potato chips, sweet potato fries, fresh fruit, or a simple salad. No need to make a big production out of it.
Make it your own. Add pickles, swap the cheese, or throw on a few extra onions if that's what your family loves. A good recipe should always leave room for a little personality.
Save some for later. Store leftover cooked beef separately from the lettuce and sauce in the refrigerator. Reheat the beef thoroughly and assemble fresh sandwiches when you're ready.

Good Food Doesn't Have to Be Complicated
I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to make every meal something special. But the truth is, some of the best meals are the simplest ones. The ones thrown together between practices, shared around the kitchen island, or carried outside to watch the game with family and friends.
These Big Mac Sandwiches are proof that you don't need hours in the kitchen to put something delicious on the table.
So the next time you're tempted to swing through the drive-thru, give these a try instead. They're easy, comforting, and made for sharing.
And around here, that's always a win.
From my kitchen to yours,
